From the moment a pollen-heavy breeze shakes the branches of the tree we try our very best not to park under, our instinct tells us to whizz over to the carwash.
Rather than risk letting natural materials slowly erode the perfect paint job on our precious cars, we’d rather spend our hard-earned cash on an automated car detailing machine at the local garage in order to leave our windscreens and wheels gleaming. But those car wash bills tend to rack up, especially for those with cars parked on leafy suburban streets – leading us to believe that there simply must be a better way.
Investing in an at-home car wash kit allows vehicle owners to remove dirt and muck without spending a small fortune every few months, but how exactly should they be used? We spoke to Jamie Louram, Car Cleaning, Oil & Winter Buyer at Halfords for some expert advice on car detailing.
“Car detailing is a thorough cleaning and reconditioning of both the interior and exterior of a vehicle. Unlike a basic car wash, detailing involves meticulous attention to detail, focusing on every nook and cranny of the car to restore its appearance to near-showroom condition,” Louram explains. “This process includes washing, waxing, polishing, and applying protective treatments to the car’s surfaces, as well as cleaning the interior components, such as seats, carpets and trims.”
“The frequency of car detailing depends on various factors, including how often you drive, where you park, and the local climate,” says the car cleaning expert. “Generally, it’s recommended to fully detail your vehicle every 4-6 months. However, if you drive in harsh conditions or park outside frequently, more regular detailing might be necessary to maintain the car’s appearance and protect its surfaces.”
According to Louram, “A well-rounded car detailing kit should include the following essential products:
