OSHA INVESTIGATING CAR INJURIES ON EDDIE MURPHY’S AMAZON MOVIE SET

Topline

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating an incident on the set of Eddie Murphy’s Amazon MGM Studios movie "The Pickup," after two people were reportedly hospitalized due to an issue with a car in Atlanta.

Key Facts

Two people were sent to the hospital with injuries after a truck being used in an action scene "locked up” and crashed into another car on Saturday, the Associated Press reported, citing the studio and an unnamed source who called it a “freak accident.”

OSHA has since opened an investigation into the incident, agency spokesperson Erika Ruthman told Forbes, adding no other information will be provided while the case is open.

An unnamed Amazon MGM Studios spokesperson told the AP the studio is "in the process of gathering facts on what happened and why," and all “safety precautions were reviewed prior to and monitored during the shoot.”

Key Background

The accident on the set of "The Pickup,” a heist comedy with an ensemble cast including Eddie Murphy, Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson, is the latest to draw the attention of the media—though major on-set injuries are fairly rare. A cinematographer was shot and killed on the set of the Alec Baldwin movie "Rust" in 2021 The armorer on the film, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Baldwin, who was holding the gun when it fired, will go on trial in July for the same charge. A crew member who fell from the rafters of a Los Angeles studio on the set of Marvel show "Wonder Man" died in February from his injuries. Crew members have also been hurt on the set of "Gladiator 2,” "Street Outlaws: Fastest in America" and “Batwoman” in recent years.

What To Watch For

A new law will go into effect in California next year to address set safety. The Directors Guild of America and the California IATSE Council pushed for the bill, which established new safety standards around the use of firearms and ammunition and will launch a pilot program to require an independent safety advisor to be on set for any production receiving California tax credits.
