GOLF CLUB RANGER, 90, INSPIRING NEXT GENERATION

A 90-year-old golf course ranger is inspiring the next generation of players.

William Clark has been a member of Maryport Golf Club since 1993 and said "the company" kept him volunteering.

Mr Clark said as he lived alone, he enjoyed going to the club, meeting new people and helping out with the junior team.

Golf helped to keep him young, he added, and he thought more people should take up the sport, especially in retirement.

Mr Clark said there had been "big celebrations" for his milestone birthday.

Mairi Stamper, the junior organiser at the club, said Mr Clark had been involved with the junior section for "years".

She told BBC Radio Cumbia the section had previously "collapsed" but Mr Clark had helped to rebuild it into the "strong" team Maryport Golf Club now had.

The "great thing" about golf was its longevity, Ms Stamper added, and said having Mr Clark still playing at the club and helping out youngsters helped to "bridge" the gap between the young and the old.
